Can anyone identify this plant that grows wild in the south?

The 2nd annual Dirt Sweat and Gears Race is not just another 12 hour mountain bike race. It's 1 part beer chugging 1x1 racing,1 part counrty music festival, 1 part trials show, and 2 parts world class endurance race.
The weekend started off Friday with the SSUSA 1x1 event. the consisted of three stage. The first was a one hour cross country with mandatory beer/rootbeer feeds. The second stage was a short hill climb, and the last was beer chugging american gladiator games. The 1x1 race was dominated by the Lalonde bothers from Wisconsin riding Gary Fisher SuperFly single speeds that must have weighed 15 pounds. Most of the racers where less concerned with winning the belt and more concerned with the PBRs and just having a good time showing off their costumes.
The 12 hour race held on 10 miles of the most pleasurable riding singletrack this work has to offer. The trail is located on the Cotton Mill Preserve in Fayetteville, TN. The winds trough has open grassy fields, perfect for campin, and staging the 12 hour event. This is the most spectator friendly race I have ever been to.
At 9am we had a la mans start in the mud from the last nights rain. The first lap was all a muddy mess. Trail conditions quicky changed for the good as the sun came out and began to shine, drying the trail up. Tinker Juarez (cannondale/ Monavie)let his years of experience shine through when he came through the first lap well ahead of the entire race. From lap one Tinker never looked back and never slowed down. Tinker took home $1500 Cash money. Tinker was chased by a young Brandon Draugelis (Sobe Cannondale) all day long. Brandon never slowed, staying close and finishing only about 10 minutes down after 11 laps. Josh Tostado ( TOSTADO/ Giant) had at least one flat tire during the race, but still rode strong for a third place finish and a piece of the cash purse. Last year's race winner Nat Ross broke a chain on the first lap and had to play catch up all day finishing in fourth place for the day.
The womens race was dominated by last year's winner and Cahoota 100 race winner Pua Sawicki aboard her Ellsworth. Pua had a clean race with consistent lap times. second place
Rebecca Rusch ( ) had a tough start, but her lap times improved each time she came through, to put a little preasure on Pua, so that she couldn't have the luxury of slowing down at all. Third Place women was Carey Lowery (Outdoor Store) one lap down, taking home her piece of the pie as well.
The race this year was Top Notch as expected. Everyone was having a good time. The race promoters work hard all year with sponsors to have the biggest shwag give away you will ever see. They gave away cash for fastest day and night laps, a bunch of bikes and frames, Gary Fisher was even on hand to give away a complete HiFi bike. Kegs, live music, if you missed out, put it on the calendar for next year.

The Cohutta 100, the first race on the N.U.E. National Ultra Endurance Race Series took place at the Ocoee Whitewater Center, the site of the '96 Olympic events, near Ducktown Tennessee, near the Georgia state line, the majority of the race was on the Georgia side. The race organized by New Leaf Adventures started and finished on the Ocoee trail system. The 100 mile course had six fully supported aid stations with food, drinks, and chain lube. Racers where given feed bags that the organizers delivered to each station. It is possible to be competitive in this race relying solely on the neutral support.
The race had record turnout and was capped at 200 riders. The field was staked with professionals. The man to beat before the race started was not last years winner and multi world champion Chris Eatough, but Floyd Landis. Everybody started at the front, for a chance to take out '' the man." The race begun on a paved road that went uphill for a mile or so before diving into muddy single track. the early morning rain kept the riders cool and the trail slippery. All the racers jockied for those front positions on the tight trail, but all that work didn't seem to matter as the course turned into 80 miles of climbing on a wide open gravel road. At about mile 30 I passed Floyd, he looked done and was going backwards fast. I don't know what his story was, but the novelty of his presence at the race quickly dissolved.
The man who stole the show for the day was Jeff Shalk riding for Trek VW, almost matching the time set by his teammate Eatough last year on a dyer faster course. Jeff beat the fastest group of guys ever compiled at a 100 mile race. I would have been interesting to see how the race at the front unfolded mile by mile. In the end it was Jeff finishing in 6 hours 48 min followed by Pro Toshiba road team racer Daniel Vaillancourt. Third place Evan Plews riding for Scott Bicycles had an impressive performance, Christian Tanguy riding for American Cycles finished fourth over endurace star Chris Eatough ( Trek VW) coming in 5th.
The women's race was crushed by Hawaiian native Monique "Pua" Sawiki riding for Ellsworth. Pua was off the front in the top twenty the whole race. She looked like she got faster as everyone else got slower as she picked off men one by one. Pua had a screaming time of 7:44 well ahead of Trek VW rider Sheryl Simonson. Completing the top five where Carrie Lawry (Outdoor Store), Trish Stevensn (I-Fab), and Rebecka Tomaszeki with Wake N Bake racing.

    backwoods racing

The long time popular Chickasaw trace classic is American grassroots racing at it's best. The AMBC series event pulls racers from multiple states in the south east and midwest regions.
The 9-mile course, located in Columbia Tennessee is just 45 minutes away from downtown Nashville. The Chickasaw park's fast flowing buffed out singletrack is some of the best in the region. heavy rains leading up to race day left the usually smooth course a slimey rooty challanging adventure. Tire selection was a key element that dictated the race outcome.
After a morning of sport and beginner races, the course left for the afternoon pro and expert races more resembled a jar of peanut butter than a trail in some sections. Local pro Dustin Greer said "[the course] was at least ten minutes slower per lap for me.''

The weekend's conflicts with the Fontana norba national and another southeast regional race kept the big names away and opened it up for local pros and semi-pros to take home the $2K cash money. The race promoter also offered an expert cash pay scale that went deeper than the pro payout.
In the pro men's race local hot shot Dustin Greer set a leg burning pace and lead the train into the first section of singletrack, Dustin soon gave the lead spot to the KHS racer and previous years race winner Andy Johnston from Georgia. Dustin spent the next three laps off the front but chasing to catch Andy all the way to the finish. Young gun Nathan Wyatt rode strong to a third place finish. I myself spent the entire race chasing Canadian Zach Winn and exchanging places with, and fending off fellow Kentucky racer Ben Richardson to round out the top 5.
The pro women's race was dominated by the powerful riding style of Amanda Sproat from Ohio. Amanda rode away from 2nd place AnnaJean Dalloaire to take home the dough $$. 19 year old Rachel Milsop from Union College said she rode a conservative race starting in the back and picking off girls one by one trough the technical sections to find a spot on the podium. Kylie Krause from North Carolina, and Kiersta Tucker from Kentucky rounded out the top five.
A good time was had by all. Props to the organizers and the Columbia Cycling Club for hosting such a great event.
